With the New Year just a few days away, I’ve been reflecting on the past year. 2016 has been a busy year for The Bollins. We finished up our kitchen remodel (Phew! That was a lot of work!); we got some great projects done (like refreshing this framed art); we traveled the coast of California, stopping in Napa, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Diego, and Anaheim. What a year it’s been!
Thinking about everything we’ve done this year has led me to start a game plan to make 2017 the best year yet. I’ve had some ideas swirling in my head and what better time to write them down and commit to them than during the fresh start of a New Year. Here’s five of my resolutions…
1. Embark on Healthy Adventures.
Healthy living isn’t a lifestyle achieved overnight. For me, it’s a constant struggle. With the start of a new year, the “old” me would renew my gym membership. This year I’m doing the exact opposite– quitting the gym! My exercise routine has gotten stale, and I end up feeling guilty for not spending precious free time on a “hamster wheel.” I’ve realized the gym isn’t the only place I can get in shape or stay active, just like there are other foods I can grab on the way to work, other than a croissant from Starbucks.
This year, I’ve made a list of healthy ideas, ranging from fun, new ways to get in exercise, to fresh ideas for eating healthy. These are things that have traditionally been outside of my comfort zone. I’m exploring one list item every month, and will write about my discoveries. I’m calling these my “healthy adventures,” which sounds much more exciting than “exercise” or a “diet.” The idea of trying something new each month I’m hoping will keep me engaged and on track for a healthier lifestyle all year long!
2. Stretch Myself Creatively.
This resolution is aimed at jumpstarting my personal creative goals. I’ve wanted to take sewing lessons for a long time. I’ve thought of crafting and designing items perhaps to sell online. Working on this blog has been a great creative outlet, and I intend to take the time to work on it more consistently this year. I look forward to taking time for these projects.
3. Continue to Improve Our Home.
Ok, so the great renovation of 2015-2016 is over, but there are still a few more things we can take on this coming year to improve our home. First off, we’ve had dreams of adding a mantle to our fireplace, so we have a place to put our Christmas stockings. Our laundry room, while operational, is also lacking finishing details and decor. The porch needs a new coat of paint. Time to roll up our sleeves again and put in some more sweat equity!
4. Travel More.
This year, I’d love to go somewhere neither Pat nor I have visited before. I have a dream list running though my head: exploring one of the big National Parks, visiting the studios where they filmed Harry Potter in England, basking in the glow of the Northern Lights in Lapland, or seeing the leaves change in Vermont. I’ll have to start scouting the travel deal sites like Airfare Watchdog and AirBnb to see how far our budget and frequent flyer miles can take us.
5. Spread Some Good.
Last but not least, I plan to spread some good in the coming year. I’d like to give blood platelets. Volunteer at a school. Cook for those in need. Donate things I’m not using. Giving back for all the blessings I have.
2017 will be a year full of amazing things! Now it’s time to get busy!
