For special occasions for the last couple years, Pat and I have preferred a quiet evening at home over going out to a nice restaurant. Not only is is less expensive, but less hassle too. We don’t have to worry about making a reservation, driving, or dealing with parking. Our favorite dinner to make on such special nights has been fondue. Not only is fondue fun and different, but– best of all — it’s really easy to prepare!
With Valentine’s Day approaching, I wanted to share one of our favorite fondue recipes. Since it’s customizable, the ingredients are more like guidelines to get started.
The set up for fondue is pretty simple. All you need is a fondue pot and fondue forks. We love out electric fondue pot, since it’s so easy to set up. Just plug it in and turn up the dial for the heat!
We also use a double boiler to heat the chocolate. An alternative method would be to use a microwave and a microwave-safe dish.
This simple dessert is made up of two components: the chocolate and the dippers. Some of our favorites things to dip are:
- Rice Krispie Treats – home-made or store bought
- Brownies – home-made or store bought
- Pound Cake or Angel Food Cake
- Cheesecake bites
We cut the dippers into bite size pieces and arrange them on a nice plate.
Note: For an upgrade to your marshmallows, take the following steps: Finely crush either Oreo cookies (without filling) or graham crackers. Place in shallow dish. Roll marshmallows in a bit of water on all sides, then roll and press them into the finely crushed cookies.
Chocolate to Melt For…
We use our favorite chocolate chips, usually 1 cup of dark chocolate and melt them down in the double boiler on the stove, stirring frequently. An alternative method would be microwaving them in 30 second intervals (stirring each time).
Once the chocolate is melted, we pour it into our fondue pot, making sure the heat is set to the lowest setting. Chocolate can be very delicate so you have to be careful not to let it burn!
So that’s all there is to this sweet dessert. I told you it was simple! Let me know if you make it, we’d love to hear what you think.
If you like fondue as much as Pat and I do, we highly recommend The Melting Pot’s Cookbook. We got it a couple years ago, and it’s quickly become our go-to guide for all things fondue.
